In 2017, deep in the hills of Valley Center, California, we embarked on a new venture, Your American Flag Store was the brilliant idea of our six-year-old son. Despite the enthusiasm and creativity behind the concept, we faced a significant hurdle: at the time, our finances were so strained that purchasing the materials needed to create even a single flag was beyond our means. Our only asset was a $50 Home Depot gift card given to us by my wife’s parents for Christmas. Thus, our business was born from a child’s dream and a modest gift card.

For nearly two years, our family traveled extensively across the western United States, setting up a sales booth crafted by our own hands to showcase our flags. We visited country music concerts, gun shows, rodeos, and various events frequented by devoted patriots. Our hard work paid off when, within the first six months, local news on KUSI San Diego featured our story, capturing the hearts of the community and propelling our business forward.  A star was born in that interview when our 6-year-old son Max stole the show or the interview as it were.

However, our journey took an unforeseen turn with the onset of COVID-19 and the accompanying lockdowns. With our original business model rendered nonviable, we had to pivot to an online strategy. To our relief, this shift not only sustained but actually grew our business, allowing us to achieve the American Dream of homeownership. We found our dream home 2,200 miles away in Harriman Tennessee, where we were free from the media’s relentless pandemic fear-mongering, yet our American Dream soon faced a daunting new challenge.

Four months after our move, we discovered that our website sales had abruptly halted. Upon investigation, we found that two of our trusted partners, Shopify and Facebook, had begun removing our best-selling American flags from our site and suspending our marketing campaigns, citing violations of their community standards. 

On February 1 2021, with our savings dwindling, bills mounting, and our children hungry, I felt utterly defeated. I returned home, where my wife was in distress over the possibility of losing everything we had built. We prayed together, asking God to show us the path He wanted us to follow—whether to return to our previous jobs or continue with our flag business.

Less than ten hours later, NEWSMAX reached out after seeing a LinkedIn post I had made. They invited me to appear on “Rob Schmitt Tonight” to share our story. PRAYER WORKS, God is listening!

As if being attacked by Facebook & Shopify were not enough, we were shocked to learn that it was going to get even worse.  PayPal froze all funds in our businesses ecommerce account. This Un-American assault on our website, marketing, and banking dealt a severe blow to our business and dreams.

It was disheartening to realize that our small family business had been targeted by three major corporations due to our differing political views. The betrayal by these tech giants, Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook, Tobias Lutke at Shopify, and Dan Schulman at PayPal, was a devastating blow. The thought of being systematically silenced and sabotaged in America because of our conservative and Christian values was both frightening and demoralizing.

Facebook, Shopify and PayPal only failed because God put Chris Knowles & Loren Emory of NEWSMAX, Sean & Rachel Duffy of FOX NEWS and Rob Sigg of Real America’s Voice on the path he created for us.  Chris, Loren, Sean & Rachel and Rob brought us on several national news programs to exposed the dirty tactics these 3 massive “Big Tech” companies have been using to CANCEL our company and thousands more like ours.  These companies are destroying American families by using these brutal tactics to bankrupt family businesses, damage reputations and crush American Dreams!

The exposure from NEWSMAX, FOX News, and Real America’s Voice brought our plight to the national stage, revealing the underhanded tactics of these tech giants. Harmeet Dhillon and the Center for American Liberty soon came to our aid, taking on the fight against Big Tech to allow us to focus on what we do best—crafting the finest American flags.

As we began to see a path forward, we were contacted by Tennessee Legislator Rep. Monty Fritts, who visited our shop to understand our situation. He sought to explore legislative solutions in Tennessee to protect businesses from the predatory actions of Big Tech. In February 2024, I had the honor of testifying before the Tennessee legislature about our experiences with PayPal. The path God has carved for us continues to unfold, offering new opportunities, renewed purpose, and a mission that grows more vital with each step.

Your American Flag Foundation

In April 5,2025 we launched a 501c3  Non-Profit Foundation, dedicated to preserving the legacy of those who have served, Your American Flag Foundation creates unique, heartfelt tributes that celebrate the courage, commitment, and service of these American heroes.

Through generous donations, we provide customized and personalized handcrafted sold wood American flags, featuring meticulously crafted hand painted artwork that properly memorialize or celebrate a life dedicated to serving others.  

 

What’s Next for the Staake’s?

James has his Eye on Tennessee’s District 12 Senate Seat.  “I’m seeing the same things in Tennessee today that I saw in California 25 years ago — and I know exactly where this road leads.”

After watching their legislation TNHB846 get killed by PayPal lobbyists in Nashville 2 years ago, it was obvious to them that Tennessee’s legislative body was a swamp that needed to be drained.  The Staake’s live in Roane County putting them in Tennessee’s District 12, James knows his community needs a new era Senator to represent their values with a stronger posture than the last several years.   Growing up in and starting  a family in California made James a first hand witness of nearly a half century of radical liberals slow and very patient rollout their newest version of of “Democratic Socialism” where communism is in a dysfunctional marriage to Woke liberal ideology.  As business owners, when big tech flogged our livelihood through corporate cancellation, political targeting, and financial de-banking, they became first hand witnesses to how “the system” works for and who it does not work for at all, who the system protects, and who it doesn’t!

After years of being told their story should be told in a documentary, in 2025 they had an opportunity to start that project and hope to have Your American Family premier in November 2027 fully exposes the actions that PayPal, Facebook and Shopify use to undermine Christian conservative business over their beliefs that expressing the art they create. 



The switch from Your American Flag Store to Covenant Art came in January 2026 when the family wanted to expand their art from a single pillar of inspiration of Patriotic Art, to 3 Pillars of art inspired by God, Family & Country.
